This problem occurs because though the Spectrum had a decent pixel resolution for the time (256x192) it's colour information was overlaid in 8x8 pixel blocks, this was due to limitations of the way the memory used to display graphics on the ZX Spectrum was set up. This is impressive on account of a couple of reasons, firstly the elimination (almost) of the Speccy's infamous "colour clash" problem.
